Dubsdread Catering Event Specialist Peighton Ballant shares her pro tips for adding a fun and engaging game to your wedding reception for your guests by adding something everyone can play together.

Before the day of your wedding, you will probably be playing many games at bridal showers, engagement parties, or even bachelor/bachelorette parties. However, our Pro Tip is to consider adding a game into your actual wedding reception schedule as a great way to get your family and friends involved, and to create lifelong memories for everyone.

One of the more recently popular games being incorporated into receptions is The Wedding Shoe Game. This game is the perfect way to get laughs from everyone and is so easy to set up and play! If you’re considering adding this quick engaging game into your day, we have the Pro Tips on how to do it!

SET-UP:
To set up the game, simply place two chairs with their backs to each other in the middle of the floor. The wedded couple sit back-to-back in the chairs, making sure they cannot see each other. Then, they both remove their shoes, and hand one to the other partner. Both people should have two shoes, one in each hand, one to represent themselves and one to represent the other person. 

CALLER:
You will designate a family member or friend to be the “caller,” and they will be prepared with a list of questions to ask the wedded couple. If you prefer, you can always ask your DJ to be the caller, just be sure to arrange this ahead of time for scheduling, preparation, and providing the question list. He or she may have additional insights that you will find helpful.  

TIMING:
It is important to play this game at the right time during the night! My Pro Tip is that it is best to play the game before the actual dancing begins, preferably once dinner wraps up, everyone is done eating, and you are ready to start the party. It’s best to kick off the fun with the game, as it sets a fun and playful mood for the rest of the evening, and as the night goes on, it becomes harder to gather everyone back into one place. 

QUESTIONS:
The questions that are being asked by the caller should be “Who...?” questions, such as “Who is the better dancer?” The two participants will then raise the shoe for the person they believe answers the question best. The key to this game is for the couple to not see how the other one is answering, it makes it more fun for the guests as they delight in the differences and agreements. 

So, now that you understand how to set up, play, and schedule the game, you are going to want to work on the list of questions you want to be used. Here is a starter list to give you some ideas:

• Who was the first to say I love you?
• Who’s the better cook?
• Who steals the covers at night?
• Who wears the pants in the relationship?
• Who is most likely to max out their credit card?
• Who is better at saving money?
• Who’s funnier?
• Who’s the pickier eater?
• Who’s the best gift giver?
• Who is most likely to lose their keys or wallet?
• Who is the better driver?
• Who is the better kisser?
• Who made the first move?
• Who does (your pet’s name) like/ love more?
• Who wakes up first?
• Who is messier?
• Who mentioned marriage first?
• Who has a better taste in music?
• Who is most likely to east dessert for breakfast?
• Who is most likely to eat breakfast for dinner?

And, if you want to end things on a sweet note, the final question can be something along the lines of:

• Who do you love more than anyone in the world?

Now this is just a smaller list to give you some ideas, but the possibilities for questions is truly endless and I suggest to our clients incorporating this into their reception to make it even more personal, you can include a spot on your reply cards where guests can write down questions to use and you can select the best ones. Overall, try to keep it to between 15 to 20 questions when you play as you don’t want to overdo it, nor drag it out too long. Another Pro Tip is to keep in mind who the audience is at the reception and make sure to keep it accordingly appropriate.
