DJ MJ

Here he shares his experience and most frequently asked questions:

1. How long have you been in the industry?
I have been a DJ for more than 24 years, and Junction 88 just celebrated its 16th birthday this month.

2. How many weddings do you do annually?
I average about 62 weddings a year, and our team at Junction 88 averages about 100 weddings per year.

3. What is your favorite part of the wedding day?
There's so many! One of my favorite things is when the bride and groom are on the dance floor during the party, and I see them taking in the entire wedding, and just being right there in that moment. The people, the décor, the venue, the lighting, the sound, it’s very rewarding to catch that moment, especially when they don't know that I did!

4. How would you describe your style?
I would describe my style as very upbeat, detail oriented, and not cheesy. I like to play the music that makes people want to get up and dance and use music to motivate people to come be part of the experience rather than being overbearing or annoying on the microphone. I am not the center of attention, and I'm not there to steal the show or the spotlight. My job is to help coordinate the reception, make all the necessary announcements, and make it an awesome party. I also am very much against dead air or having any moment without music in the background unless someone is speaking. As for my actual DJ style, I love to mix. In my opinion the music should NEVER stop when the party gets going. I describe my style similar to a “club style DJ” where I mix EVERYTHING I can. Oldies, Disco, 80s, 90s, 2000s to current and even some rock and roll will mix too! If I can find a way to make the transition seamless, it will be!

5. What kind of packages do you offer?
We offer full DJ services for receptions which includes all the sound equipment and the DJ to help coordinate and MC the reception. but can do also do much more. We can provide microphones and music for ceremonies, background music during the cocktail hour, and photo booths for receptions. We feature Wireless LED Uplighting, Wireless PinSpots, Gobos (to put your names in lights), MarketStreet Lighting, even LED candles if needed. We also have a great relationship with many different vendors, so if there's an effect a client wants, we do everything we can to make it happen. Our planning process includes a login to our online planning system where there are questionnaires about the event as well as a music request and suggestion system. We try to make it as easy and fun as possible!

6. How far in advance do you recommend couples book?
I always say a year so that you get to pick the vendor you really want rather than the vendors that are left over. However, I’ve seen that a lot of 2021 brides are already booking now, so I might suggest increasing that if there is a vendor you really want.

7. What advice do you give to couples when choosing a DJ?
Find a DJ that has the personality and style that meshes with what you are looking for. A wedding DJ does so much more than just play music. Meet with your DJ to make sure it's someone you are getting a good feeling from. If you're meeting with a company that has many different DJs, make sure the person you are meeting with is the person who will be your DJ. Their name should be on the agreement that you sign. Also, go online and read reviews to help find the ones that share your visions and thoughts of how things should go.

8. What is a pet peeve of yours during a wedding?
Last second schedule changes. When someone comes up and says, “Play this song NOW!” I do my best to accommodate when I can, but the couple getting married have put a lot of time into planning this and have schedules and specific playlists I need to keep up with. Disrupting the flow of the plan or schedule can throw things off course and I just never want to let the couple down. Of course, we try to accommodate, but sometimes the set is taking the group down a specific path to get to that one killer song that brings everyone to the floor, but now that moment has changed and we have to start over to setup the energy to create that moment again.

9. What sets you apart from other DJs in the industry?
One thing I know that's different from a lot of DJs is how we have our lighting computer controlled. When the party starts our Uplighting and dance floor lighting is all synced together and creates a total room effect that is just awesome to see. I'm told that this alone sets us apart from everyone else. Also, my clients who hire me and have attended events that I have not worked, tell me that my attention to detail is second to none. My lighting makes your pictures come to life, my ability to pick the right song at the right time in the sequence creates party environments that can't be replicated by just anyone. I absolutely love my work and I’ve been told that I am really good at it, so I appreciate that positive feedback and reviews allow me to keep doing it!

10. What song is your favorite go-to for getting people up and dancing?
It's always changing, and many times it's dependent on the party and people in front of me, but some of my favorite go-tos have to be “Shout!”, the version from Animal House; Michael Jackson's “Don't Stop 'Till You Get Enough”, and Usher's “Yeah!”.
