History of Wedding Traditions – La Hora Loca

Dubsdread Catering Team Event Specialist, Peighton Ballant shares the history behind the tradition of “La Hora Loca” at the wedding reception.

Wedding traditions that are popular today almost always originate from some long ago custom or heritage that are passed through families. This includes “La Hora Loca”. Loosely translated, “La Hora Loca” is Spanish for “The Crazy Hour,” and is a sure way to keep the party alive at your wedding! But where does this wonderful, crazy, and energy-filled tradition come from?

ORIGIN

La Hora Loca originated in Venezuela, although it does have ties to Spain. A Venezuelan couple visited Spain for the New Year and were intrigued by all of the costumes, festivities, and music. They decided that when they went back home, they would bring the party with them and try to create a Venezuelan tradition. They started a business called “Hora Loca,” and sold costumes, masks, noisemakers, and anything of the like. This business was extremely successful, and they soon expanded to America, to where they are now shipping supplies all over the world.

MODERN CELEBRATIONS

When the night seems to be dying down and guests are getting tired, the lights get dimmed, a siren sounds, and exotic performers come out! They’re wearing bright colors, masks, and beads around their necks while grabbing everyone and pulling them on the dance floor. Performers are often feathered carnival dancers, but there can also be stilt walkers and even LED robots incorporated into the production.

PRO TIPS FOR INCORPORATING IT INTO YOUR CELEBRATION

Pro Tip 1: Although this sounds like a fun time, be sure to check that your venue will allow it beforehand. A lot of venues will have restrictions on things such as confetti, fog machines, and glitter, which are commonly used in La Hora Loca. But don’t fret! Even if you can’t have some items, you can still create an unforgettable dance party. La Hora Loca performers pride themselves on energizing your reception and giving your guests an hour of partying that they could never forget!

Pro Tip 2: Make sure you keep all of the props hidden from your guests until the party begins – you don’t want to spoil the surprise!
